New PhD position in Quantum Physics

05.10.26

Context

aQCess is a public quantum computing platform designed to provide gate-based quantum computing as a service. It presents a concentrated effort to construct an apparatus with a tweezer array of single atoms, capable of site-resolved quantum control. The proposed PhD project fits within a team effort with a concrete deliverable (a full-stack universal quantum computer) but also has exploratory facets, providing avenues for scientific discovery.

Position

Status : 3-year position Category : A Corps : PhD
Position : PhD candidate Full Time
Job-type : Research in quantum physics and quantum computing.
BAP : BAP C
Composante, Direction, Service : Université de Strasbourg, ISIS-CESQ
Contact(s) for more information :
Prof. WHITLOCK Shannon (whitlock[at]unistra.fr) and Dr KONDOV Stanimir (kondov[at]unistra.fr)

Mission

The selected candidate will carry out her/his doctorate in quantum physics under the supervision of Prof. WHITLOCK Shannon and Dr KONDOV Stanimir.

Activities

In this PhD project, the candidate will participate in the construction and bring-up of the aQCess neutral atom quantum computer. As a part of a team of physicists and engineers, they would design, construct, and install optical subsystems for coherent manipulation of atoms. They would participate in the characterization of the physical properties of the atom registers and partake in scientific measurements, reports, and paper-writing.

Competences

The Candidate will have a strong background in :

  • Quantum mechanics and atomic physics
  • Experimental methods
  • Data analysis
  • Engineering and optomechanics
  • Computer-aided design and modeling
  • Working knowledge of scientific lasers

Working environment

The doctoral student will be based in Strasbourg (within the Quantum Physics Laboratory at the Institute de Sciences et Institute of Supramolecular Science and Engineering – European Center for Quantum Sciences). He/she will be supervised by Prof. WHITLOCK Shannon and Dr KONDOV Stanimir. The PhD will be funded by, and linked to, the French ANR project, QuanTEdu-France. The date of the PhD will be January 1st or later in 2027.

The doctoral student will be working in a multicultural environment where English spoken language is required.

To apply, please send CV, motivation letter, and at least one letter of recommendation before the October 30th to the attention of: Dr KONDOV Stanimir, kondov[at]unistra.fr

Congratulations to Laura Pecorari on the successful defense of her PhD thesis

On Thursday 24 September, Laura Pecorari, PhD student in Guido Pupillo's group, successfully defended her thesis titled "Building blocks for fault-tolerant quantum computation with neutral atom arrays,". In it, she tackles one of the central challenges in neutral atom quantum computing: connectivity. Laura investigated the trade-off between qubit connectivity and experimental cost, aiming to store…

CESQ connects to atomic clocks via the REFIMEVE network

Since 21 April, the CESQ1 has been connected to the REFIMEVE research infrastructure network, managed by the Laboratory of Laser Physics2 and the Time and Space Laboratory (LTE)3, which distributes the most accurate time and frequency references available via fibre optics from the LTE’s atomic clocks. This distribution is carried out without any degradation in…
